Cycle to the Sahara

They made it! Amazingly our intrepid students have completed their cycle ride from Glasgow to the Sahara. The whole office is in awe and so should you be. You can catch up with their adventures on their blog and read their fantastic stories here and you can donate to Right To Play on their behalf here. They have gone through the pain barrier for 42 days and covered all costs themselves, we are so proud of them and grateful for their support. A few pounds will mean a great deal to them and will make a big difference to our work. Well done team!

The team have now completed their amazing challenge - this was the original story before they departed.
Some say their plan is undo-able, some think it’s crazy and a bit stupid ,but we don’t. Charlotte Slaymark, Chris Millar, Donnie Moonie and Matty Owen are cycling to the Sahara Desert in Morocco this summer, leaving Glasgow on the 24th June to travel approximately 2600 miles. They aim to raise £10,000 for Right To Play alongside GUSA (Glasgow University Sports Association), who have raised money throughout the year.
Right To Play is proud to be the chosen cause for such a fantastic showing of commitment, dedication and passion. The team took a few moments to tell us, and you, more about it - we expect you will be as impressed as we are. So over to, Charlotte, Chris, Donnie and Matty.
"Cycle to Sahara’ is putting our sporting abilities and endurance to the test for an epic adventure. We will be faced with hot climates, unknown terrain and unfamiliar cultures. Getting lost, being hungry and tired will be very familiar to us and no doubt Charlotte will be moaning like the girl she is. Our route will take us through England, France, across the Pyrenees to Spain and over to Morocco, to still be faced with the Atlas Mountains and then... the Sahara. Other obstacles expected to confront us will be sleeping within an inch of each other in tiny tents, and carrying almost our body weight in kit! Ramadan is another obstacle for us, it’s occurring in the month of August when no shops or restaurants with be open in day light hours, but we can handle it. We are taking everything in our stride –or should that be pedal? It’s going to be tough, none of us have cycled this far before or even driven this far for that matter! A recent talk by Mark Beaumont gave us the encouragement we need to keep planning hard and training even harder.
In the coming months we will be raising publicity to crazy levels – think GUU (Glasgow University Union) elections meets Fresher’s Week fun. We hope to hold events in order to raise funds to support our expedition. Cycling miles and camping for weeks on end surprisingly costs a fair amount. We need the University’s staff and student body’s help to raise money to enable us to support Right To Play. Look out for a Lycra Ceilidh and a sponsored 48hour cycle as our fundraising events. Please help us meet our ambitious target and donate directly to Right To Play on our just giving page - www.justgiving.com/Cycle-to-Sahara.
We still require corporate sponsorship so if you have any information that relates to our expedition please email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Of course you can find us on facebook too. Right To Play give great opportunities to people that need them. We are all very lucky to have been given limitless opportunities in sport growing up and at university. We hope to make Glasgow University very proud and with your donations we can make a big difference for sport in developing countries."
Charlotte, Chris, Donnie (Glasgow Uni) and Matty (Newcastle Uni).
