Ambassador Profile - Ben Parfitt RHUL

Name:
Ben Parfitt
What do you like about your University?
Set in the leafy suburbs of Surrey, Royal Holloway is a relatively small campus Uni and that's what I love about it. It is such a friendly little place and is something of a student bubble with everyone just a stones throw away. This has made my job as a Student Ambassador much easier be it organising an event on campus or advertising the Brussels to London cycle ride.
What have you done for Right To Play at RHUL?
This academic year: 4 students (myself included) ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon which was great fun, the basketball team held a 3-a-side tournament, the rugby team held a touch rugby tournament, we had a Christmas tombola, we went carol singing, a couple of us volunteered at the AEGON Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, the sports centre organised a '25 hour cycle' on cycling machines dotted around campus and I won the RAG triathlon.
What have you got in the pipeline?
We have got a Right To Play day planned in March which is Right To Play Month, where all of the sports teams will organise a competition/event and hopefully get massive involvement, have some fun and raise some money for an excellent cause. This will then be followed up by an event in the SU during the evening. The Brussels to London bike ride is the big goal for the year and we should hopefully have a large team from Royal Holloway.

Why did you become a Student Ambassador and what have you learnt from the role?
I became a Student Ambassador because I wanted something to keep me busy which it has definitely done. It gave me a reason to go out and meet loads of fantastic people. I now feel like a much greater part of the Uni and have recently been elected RAG Chair which I would never have done had I not become a Student Ambassador. Its been a brilliant experience so far and well worth getting involved.
I have learnt a lot too. I have learnt that I cant do everything myself (even though I would like to!). One of the most valuable bits of advice from RTP was to "let them get on with it" with reference to the sports centre and their continuous cycle. I now see my role not as organising numerous events single handedly but in promoting RTP and making sure that we are top of the agenda at Royal Holloway and therefore enthusing others to help me and be part of Right To Play themselves.
