Ambassador Profile - Team Oxford

alt

Our current featured ambassadors represent something we value very highly at Right To Play - teamwork.  These ambassadors have formed a society and work together to represent Right To Play at Oxford University and their great work deserves to be recognised.  If you are interested in joining the Oxford RTP society or want more information about whats going on at Oxford please email Dave Bruce at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Names:

Dave Bruce, Joe Mercer, Holly Edmond.  (hereafter affectionately known as D, J and H)

What do you like about your University?

D - It’s really varied with plenty to do and students from all over the UK and the rest of the world.

J - There is just so much going on all the time, lots of opportunities.

H - The student scene!- In Oxford it's easy to get involved in sports or socities at college and university level.

So you guys have made a Right To Play society – tell us about it, do you enjoy working as a team?

H - Yep we founded Oxford's RTP this year. Working together means we can be more ambitious with our ideas. As our team grows (Victoria Moffett and Victoria Princewill have just joined us for example) we hope to take RTP to a wider audience in Oxford.

J - Working as a team means we have been able to support each other in individual fund-raising events as well as coming together to hold larger events together, hopefully a recipe for a successful year raising money for Right To Play!

D - It’s been really useful to have a structure and individual roles which helps us work well as a team. It should also bring some continuity to RTP at Oxford and help create a base for future ambassadors.

What have you guys done so far for Right To Play

alt

D - Promoted Right To Play at the university freshers’ fair and organised a RTP Freshers’ Drinks, for those who wanted to know more and get involved.

H - We’ve recently done Night To Play, where a local restrauant, shop and clubnight offered us discounted curry, drinks and ticket which we packaged and sold to students at Oxford with all the proceeds going to Right To Play.  Everyone had a great evening and we raised a few hundred pounds.

J - Me & Rachel Deegan have done a (sports based!) cake sale, selling energy bar/flapjacks etc after a cross country race. And we all collected money and promoted Right To Play Day earlier this year.

What have you got planned for this year?

H - Supporting Teddy Hall Relays (a running race) organised by the university’s cross country club (providing marshalls, helping with time keeping etc). We’ll also set up a Right To Play stall to promote RTP and sell merchandise, cakes and take donations.

J - More cake sales!

D - Fun run and sports day aimed at school-children and families.

Why did you become Student Ambassadors and what have you learnt from the role?

D - I was looking to do some work for charity and as I love sports, Right To Play was the ideal charity- I also think that it’s emphasis on giving children the opportunity to play is important and often neglected. It’s been a great experience and has helped me improve my organizational, motivational and management skills, while giving me the sense of doing something worthwhile.

J -  I was really inspired by the work RTP does, I think its original and incredibly valuable. As someone who enjoys sport I think it makes a fantastic vehicle for raising awareness and money for a great cause

H - I became a student ambassador because it meant that I could combine my interest in the work that RTP does, with gaining experience in charity work. I've learnt how to effectively engage people in ideas, and enthuse them about the work that RTP does. These skills are invaluable in general life aswell as within the context of RTP.

Thanks Dave, Joe and Holly and everyone at Oxford for supporting Right To Play and doing such a fantastic job over there.  It is inspiring to a team going from strength to strength and functioning so well together.   If you are interested in becoming a Student Ambassador at your university or college please take a look at this or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
