Jordan
Background
-
There are ten official Palestinian refugee camps located in Jordan, and altogether they accommodate more than 300,000 refugees.
-
Although the camps were created as temporary living accommodations, over time, they have become permanent. Living conditions are characterised by poverty, high population densities, unemployment, and inadequate basic infrastructure.
-
Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer are all on the rise due to inactivity and poor diet. Sanitation and health care is also poor. Birth rates are among the highest in the world and intervals between births are short, thus affecting women's health, whilst amongst children diarrhoea and intestinal parasites are particularly prevalent.
What We Do
We work with the UN and other non-governmental and governmental agencies to provide sport and play activities in refugee camps and elsewhere in Jordan.
So Far
In Zarqa camp, north of Amman, 120 trained teachers engage 4491 Palestine refugee children from the camp in regular sport and play activities.
In Irbid camp 115 teachers have been trained and deliver our programs to all of the 7233 Palestinian refugee children living there.
In the Greater Amman area, 216 teachers were trained and 7164 children participated in Right To Play programs in 2007.
In total there are 18,888 Right To Play youth beneficiaries in Jordan.
