Sri Lanka

BackgroundSri Lanka

  • The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka has a population of 20 million, a mix of four major ethnic groups (Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Moors, Indian Tamil and Sri Lankan Tamil), and four major religions (Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity).
  • Sri Lanka’s recent history has been plagued by a protracted complex humanitarian emergency, highlighted by a war that erupted in 1983 between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
  • In addition to the strained relations between the Sinhalese and the Tamil, Sri Lanka was most recently affected the tsunami on December 26th 2006. In excess of 50,000 people perished in the province, of which around one third of all victims were children.
  • In addition the tsunami destroyed education infrastructure, including 182 schools in total, preventing children the right to a proper education. In some areas 30% of the children are displaced.

What We Do

Right To Play projects in Sri Lanka are located in the southern districts of Matara and Hambantota and the Country Office is located in Colombo. We work to develop individual capacity by providing ongoing sport and play activities that promote health, teach leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills to Sri Lankan children and youth. Primary beneficiaries are displaced and marginalised children and youth in Tsunami affected communities, sports organisations and schools in districts of Matara and Hambantota. Secondary beneficiaries include adults, youth coaches and teachers in schools, clubs and sports organisations and community group network participants in the two districts.

So Far

4,500 children and youths have been reached in Matara and Hambantota, along with 350 trained Coaches.
